GENESIS OF UTKAL BRAHMINS.

   उपनयन संस्कार का अर्थ है- "ब्रह्म (ईश्वर) और ज्ञान के पास ले जाना"। उपनयन संस्कार जिसमें जनेऊ पहना जाता है और विद्यारंभ होता है। जनेऊ या यज्ञोपवीत अथवा ब्रह्मसूत्र धारण विधि। पहले ॐ मंत्र का तीन बार जाप करें। उसके उपरांत ॐ(ओ३म्) मंत्र॥ 1. जनेऊ को शुद्ध जल से या यदि सम्भव हो तो गंगा जल से धो लें जिससे उसपर पड़े हुए स्पर्श संस्कार दूर हो जाए। इसके बाद उसको दोनों हाथों के बीच रखकर गायत्री मंत्र का मानसिक या मंद स्वर में मंत्र का जप करें। इतना करने से जनेऊ पवित्र एवं अभिमंत्रित हो जाता है। गायत्री मंत्र ॐ भूर् भुवः स्वः। तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं। भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि। धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥ 2 .इसके बाद किसी प्लेट में या पीपल के पत्ते पर पुष्प की कुछ पंखुड़ियां छिड़कर उसपर ब्रह्मसूत्र को प्रेम और आदर सहित स्थापित कर दें। तत्पश्चात निम्नलिखित (9 देवताओं का आवाहन मंत्र) एक-एक मंत्र पढ़ते हुए चावल अथवा एक-एक पुष्प को यज्ञोपवीत पर छोड़ता जाए।  इसप्रकार से एक-एक धागे एवं ग्रन्थियों में देवताओं का आवाहन करें। जनेऊ या यज्ञोपवीत के तंतुओं में देवताओं का आवाहन मंत्र। प्रथमतंतौ – ऊँ कारं आवाहयामि।
