The Bhavasagara denotes the vast ocean of worldly existence, the cycle of birth and death through which souls pass from one life to the next. It is the covered by the boundless realm of maya , wherein the soul struggles amid waves of desire and ignorance, unknowing itself and others, its past and future lives, yet ever seeking the shore of liberation. The concepts of Jagrat (Wakefulness), Svapna (Dream), and Suṣhupti (Deep Sleep) are fundamental states of consciousness described in Vedanta philosophy , particularly in the Mandukya Upanishad .
